Letter to the editor: Resident car accident advice

Hi, my name is Shelia Thompson,

I recently was the focus of an article on my car accident I was in. I just wanted to give an update on my situation.

First, I would like to say “it is because of God’s love, grace and mercy He had for me on August 2, 2009 at 5:30pm that I am still here”. The driver who hit me had no insurance according to the police report. To all of you, make sure you know what your insurance policy covers. I had never read mine until August 3, 2009 at 7:30am.

I was blessed my policy covered uninsured motorists. I was fully covered with rental because my car was a total loss. When dealing with your insurance company on your total loss vehicle, make sure you know what the total value your car was worth before the accident (check the blue book) .

It is your insurance job to make you an offer on your vehicle and they will go with the lowest offer first. By you knowing yourself what the value of your car is worth, you can accept or decline the offer. I was blessed to have family members and friends which allowed me to stay a step ahead of the insurance company. Even though you pay your insurance faithfully each month believe me they will try to pull one over on you.

I never would’ve thought I would’ve been faced with a situation like this but at the “blink of an eye” anything can happen.

As of today, I am still doing therapy 3 days a week. I haven’t returned back to work. My daughter and niece are recovering but we still are dealing with the accident mentally. Today, I am grateful and thankful for my life. Because God brought me to it and I know He will see me throught it.
