Rev John speaks as Alice Woods listens
Alice Woods listens to Rev. John speak to the church

There was a lot of celebrating going on in the White Acres community this past Sunday. Area residents could hear the music and the singing from the church building that had been empty and quiet for nearly 3 years. A new church, a new location and a new beginning is how Pastor Alexander White and the members of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church see the old St. Andrew Church now. White and his fellow church members officially moved their startup church from a Magnolia location to the once vacant St. Andrews facility at 821 LaBranch Street in McComb over the past week, culminating the transfer with a joint afternoon worship service with the United Methodist Convention of Mississippi(UMC).

“I don’t have to attend every argument I’m invited to.”

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:18

Have you ever tried to argue with yourself? Feels pretty stupid, right? No matter how loud you get, how adamant you are at getting your point over, or how red your ears get. If you’re not getting feedback, the argument kind of losses its oomph. There’s something innate in us that causes us to want to defend, with fervor, our point of view.

Nevertheless, there are times when more can be said by our silence. After stating your views and noticing the other party is upset, it may be better to drop the matter. Talking about an attention getter! Your decision not to argue will really get noticed.

“Forget yourself for others and others will never forget you.” Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the law and the prophets. Matthew 7:12

Has anybody ever given you something you didn’t expect to receive? An un-birthday present or an ‘I saw this and thought of you kind of thingy? It doesn’t have to be a lot or even cost much. Just knowing somebody’s thinking about you gives you the warm fuzzies. It feels pretty good, doesn’t it? I had forgotten how much pleasure that could bring….until I gave a gift like that to someone.

“The recipe for perpetual ignorance  is to be satisfied with your own opinion.” A wise man will hear, and will increase in learning, and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsel. Proverbs 1:5

There is a certain little high we get when we’re right about something.  Being the one with the right answer gives us a feeling of pride, worth and value.  We get a charge from being the one people come to for guidance.  That’s human nature.  We all need to feel necessary.
